The police left the streets just days into the riots...
Which meant in order to keep our neighborhoods safe for our families...
The civilians had to become the police.
So we hit the streets...
Me...
The few other western expats who chose to stay...
The Russians...
And the Egyptians.
We took turns standing outside our neighborhood for hours at a time with whatever weapons we could find...
To make sure no looters or escaped prisoners would break into our homes or stores.
It was three full weeks of instability, uncertainty and prayers for it all to come back to normal...
Soon enough... it did.
The country stabilized.
The prisoners were recaptured.
The chaos stopped.
And things went back to normal (or close to normal).
This is the part of my story where I wish I could say we lived "happily ever after." But that wasn't the reality.
I faced many other trials on this journey of Hijrah.
I've been incarcerated.
