Egyptian MP Amal Salama has called for a temporary suspension of Uber and similar companies in Egypt until they meet certain operating standards. This action was prompted by a series of criminal incidents involving Uber drivers, including cases of assault and kidnapping. The situation escalated following a recent incident where a German tourist accused an Uber driver of attempted kidnapping and assault, leading to the driver's imprisonment. The MP emphasized that these recurring crimes compromise both tourism and public safety, highlighting the lack of adequate oversight and the hiring of individuals with criminal backgrounds. Salama proposed several safety measures, such as stricter hiring practices, the installation of surveillance cameras, and GPS tracking in vehicles to enhance passenger security.
